This finals project and diploma thesis at HTL Spengergasse began in May with the search for a company willing to collaborate with us. Thanks to my colleague Verena Bauer, we were able to connect with Partner Ship Design, who gave us the opportunity to redesign a river cruise. The main goal was to broaden the target age group, shifting the focus to a younger audience aged 18 to 40 years.
As young adults ourselves, we considered what would make river cruising more appealing to our generation. That’s when we developed the concept of “Workation”—a combination of work and vacation, where people work remotely while traveling. This allows for productivity while enjoying a change of scenery, seamlessly blending work and leisure for a more flexible and fulfilling experience.
A river cruise is the perfect setting for this concept, as it offers more than just a stay in a single city. Instead of being confined to a hotel, passengers can enjoy changing landscapes, visit multiple destinations, and make the most of their travel time—working while cruising between cities and unwinding along the way. This creates a unique balance between exploration, relaxation, and productivity, making the cruise experience more dynamic and attractive to a younger audience.
